US VCs, International Corporate VCs primary backers of Canadian startups

In the first half of 2017, US and international investors invested 55% of all venture capital (VC) disbursements in Canadian companies. US VCs and international (non-US) corporate VCs play prominent roles in backing companies.

VC funds lead all investor types, investing $616 million or 40% of all disbursements. US VC funds alone invested $439 million, 2.7 times of the 162 million invested by all Canadian VC funds.

Intentional corporate VCs invested $120 million, ranking the third largest investor, behind US VCs and Canadian VCs.

The top five investor types accounted for 60% of all disbursement in first half of 2017.
