Avast to acquire SecureKey Technologies

CPE News (3.24.2022) – Avast plc (LSE: AVST) has agreed to acquire SecureKey Technologies Inc., a global provider of digital identity and authentication solutions.

Avast plc has yet to disclose purchase price for SecureKey Technologies. The transaction is expected to close in early April 2022.

Services developed by SecureKey include those currently known as Verified.Me, a first-of-its-kind, distributed digital identity verification network, and Government Sign-In by Verified.Me for convenient login to hundreds of government online services and applications.

Both services are provided by Interac Corp. under an exclusive Canadian licensing arrangement. In October 2021, Interac Corp. entered into a strategic transaction to acquire the exclusive rights to SecureKey Technologies Inc. digital ID services for Canada. The acquisition includes SecureKey Canadian business contracts and exclusive licence in Canada of its intellectual property.

Post-Interac arrangement, SecureKey continues to operate its international business and continues to collaborate on developing digital ID networks and new licence deals in other markets.

On October 10, 2021, NortonLifeLock Inc. (NASDAQ: NLOK) entered into an agreement to acquire Avast valued between US $8.1 billion to US $8.6 billion in cash and stock. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the United Kingdom announced on March 16, 2022 that it will refer the merger to “a Phase 2 investigation unless undertakings in lieu of referral are offered and accepted.” Avast stock dropped from £645 to £560 following the CMA announcement.

Avast to Acquire SecureKey Technologies

Acquisition of digital identity and authentication provider will expand Avast’s Identity product and services portfolio as part of its digital freedom vision

Identity and Authentication and reusable digital identity services are expected to grow to $266bn by 2027 with a CAGR of 68.9%, according to Liminal (formerly OWI), the digital identity specialists, with the private sector to capture the majority of this growth. SecureKey’s mission has been to simplify consumer access to secure online services and applications, such as government, healthcare, and financial account opening, utilizing secure digital versions of the credentials they already have and trust.
