Announcing Gadget’s $8.5M Seed Round

We’re excited to share that Gadget has raised an $8.5M USD seed round led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from Bessemer Venture Partners. We’re building the first truly complete serverless stack for e-commerce app developers. We believe building amazing applications should take hours, not weeks, and this backing allows us to fulfill this vision.

It’s been just over a year since Mo and I started Gadget to solve our own problem: it takes way, way too long to get something real off the ground. There’s so much accidental complexity involved in building even the simplest applications — hosting, databases, auth, logging are all necessary, and pagination, search, file uploads, and APIs are rapidly becoming so. Worse, if you are trying to build within an exciting ecosystem like Shopify, you have to spend a huge amount of time wiring up webhooks and OAuth before you can even touch real data.

We think that sucks, and so we’re going to change it. We’re building a truly full stack development platform that includes all of these elements built in. You write code like you might elsewhere, but you sit atop a serverless database, a serverless runtime, an API generator, and a big list of built-in framework features you don’t need to build yourself. We believe the first line of code you write should concern the problem you set out to solve.

We’re going to use this funding to continue building out the Gadget platform, including exciting features like Computed Fields, native version control, and so much more. We also have a lot of interesting, challenging platform elements to build, so we’re hiring software developers, designers, developer advocates, and more. We’d like to thank Mike and Jeremy for their belief in us and our vision, as well as all the incredible angel investors and advisors that got us to this point. We’d also like to thank our amazing team for building like demons and caring so deeply about our mission.

We can’t wait to see what you build.
