Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan closes acquisition of HomeEquity Bank

CPE News (7.4.2022) – Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board has completed the previously announced acquisition of HomeQ Corporation, the parent company of HomeEquity Bank, from Birch Hill Equity Partners Management Inc. and the other minority shareholders.

HomeEquity Bank is a Schedule 1 Canadian Bank offering a range of reverse mortgage solutions including the flagship CHIP Reverse Mortgage product. The value of HomeEquity Bank’s total reverse mortgage portfolio under management now stands at $5.7 billion.

In November 2012, Birch Hill Equity Partners IV took HomeQ private for $9.50 per share for total equity value, on a fully diluted basis, of approximately $132 million.

As part of the transaction, HomeQ’s senior management and directors, including Steven Ranson, Gary Krikler, Greg Bandler, Celia Cuthbertson, Scott Cameron, Wendy Dryden, and Daniel Jauernig, became minority shareholders of HomeQ by rolling over part of their shareholdings into the new HomeQ.

Ontario Teachers’ announces completion of its acquisition of HomeEquity Bank

TORONTO, ON, July 4, 2022 – Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board (“Ontario Teachers’”) announced today that it has completed the acquisition of HOMEQ Corporation (“HomeQ”), the parent company of HomeEquity Bank, from Birch Hill Equity Partners Management Inc. (“Birch Hill”) and the other minority shareholders of HomeQ, in a deal that was first announced in September 2021.

The acquisition by Ontario Teachers’ represents the organization’s continued vision for investing in successful Canadian financial services businesses like HomeEquity Bank, which is focused on serving retired Canadians through pioneering approaches to building wealth and financial security.
